MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Former University of Miami booster Nevin Shapiro has again lashed out at the university and the NCAA over their investigation in allegations of wrongdoing concerning the athletic department.

“I gave them the body, the weapon and evidence and the NCAA still managed to screw this thing up somehow,” Shapiro told CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.

Shapiro is accused of giving money to players and coaches among other violations.

“The NCAA is just not equipped to police member institutions when they can’t even police their own institution,” he told the paper. “This was just too big for the compliance office of the NCAA. Period.”

Shapiro also reportedly targeted UM President Donna Shalala in his attacks.

“Show the facts, not just the ones that you want to show because you think you have a legal loophole. I dare you,” Shapiro said.

Angry with former UM players who turned their backs on his when he went to prison, Shapiro cited three factors that he says validate his claims: UM self-imposing two bowl bans “without even all of the facts in hand yet”; UM paying the bankruptcy trustee $83,000 to ensure that no former UM players would be deposed; and the fact none of the players he named in the Yahoo! story have sued Yahoo! for defamation.

UM has conceded some of Shapiro’s claims are true but disputes many of them, including some uncorroborated beyond Shapiro, reported the paper.

Shapiro is currently serving a 20-year prison term for running a $930 million dollar Ponzi scheme.
